How is DataDog a competitor to Palantir?
DataDog makes tools for software engineers working on infrastructure reliability.
Palantir creates analytical software solutions for non software engineering users
Exactly. I can‘t imagine a Software company innovating enough to dominate new markets, if their R+D spend is below 20% of revenue.
I dont think it is about being competitors but more so about the difference in R&D between similar businesses in similar cycles.
It goes to illustrate Palentir might be investing too little in next Gen technology - a fair concern.

I don't understand the Palantir technology, but from my 35 years of investing in tech stocks I do understand a lot of their hype-cycles. Sorry for wasting your time though.
